Questions and answers
Plain answers about the rupee, gold and what sits inside a jeweller's price. We publish what the numbers are, never what they will do next.
01Why the rupee moves
Why does the exchange rate change every day?
Because the rupee floats. Its value comes from people buying and selling it all day: importers, exporters, banks, investors. The price moves as demand shifts, so there is no single fixed price set for the day.
Who decides what the rupee is worth?
No one body. The rate comes out of trading between banks and large institutions. India's central bank can step in to smooth sharp moves, but it does not set a daily price.
Where does currency trading actually happen?
Mostly between banks, directly with each other, across a global network rather than in one building. There is no single exchange the way there is for shares, which is part of why you will see slightly different rates in different places.
What does "the rupee fell" mean?
You need more rupees to buy one dollar than before. If USD/INR moves from 95 to 96, the rupee has weakened, even though the number went up.
Why does the rupee tend to weaken over the years?
Currencies with higher inflation than their trading partners usually drift weaker over time. India also imports most of its oil, which has to be paid for in dollars. It moves both ways day to day, but that is the long run pull.
Why do different websites show slightly different rates?
Because there is no single official price. Each site takes its number from different sources at different moments, and some show a bank's retail price rather than the market rate.
Do rates change at night and on weekends?
Currency markets run nearly around the clock on weekdays as trading moves through time zones. They are largely closed at the weekend, so weekend numbers are usually Friday's closing levels.
02Reading the numbers
What does USD/INR = 95 mean?
One US dollar costs 95 rupees.
What is the "mid-market" or interbank rate?
The midpoint between what buyers offer and sellers ask, roughly the rate banks trade at with each other. It is the cleanest reference point, but it is not a price you personally get.
What does 0.00% next to a rate mean?
The rate has not changed since the previous figure we recorded.
Why do some rates say "calculated"?
Because they are worked out from the dollar rate and international cross rates rather than quoted directly against the rupee. Most smaller currency pairs work this way everywhere.
Why is the Japanese yen shown per 100?
One yen is worth well under a rupee, so quoting per 100 is easier to read, and it is the normal convention.
How often are these numbers updated?
Every hour. Gold, silver and the currency rates are all refreshed on an hourly cycle.
03Sending money to India
Why was my bank's rate worse than the rate I saw online?
The number you see online is usually the market rate. Banks and transfer services add a margin on top of it. That margin is how the service earns, and it is often bigger than the fee they show you.
So the fee is not the whole cost?
No. Two services can both advertise "zero fees" and still hand over noticeably different amounts, because the real difference sits inside the exchange rate they use.
Does a small rate move really matter?
On a transfer of 1 lakh rupees, a one rupee move in USD/INR is roughly 1,000 rupees. On routine transfers it adds up.
Why do GCC currencies barely move against the dollar?
Several of them are pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate, including the UAE dirham, the Saudi riyal and the Qatari riyal. So AED/INR moves almost entirely because of what the rupee is doing, not the dirham.
Is there a best time to send money?
We do not offer that kind of guidance. We publish what the rate is, not what it will do next.
04Gold basics
Why is gold priced per 10 grams in India?
Convention. India has long quoted gold by the tola and then per 10 grams, while much of the world quotes per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams.
What does 916 stamped on my jewellery mean?
It is the purity mark for 22 karat, meaning 91.6% gold. 999 is 24K at 99.9% pure, and 750 is 18K at 75%.
What is the difference between 22K and 24K?
24K is pure gold: soft, and mostly used for coins and bars. 22K has a small amount of other metal mixed in for strength, which is why most Indian jewellery is 22K.
What is a BIS hallmark and a HUID?
The BIS hallmark certifies purity. The HUID is a six character code identifying that specific piece. Hallmarking is required for most gold jewellery sold in India, and the code can be checked in the BIS Care app.
Why does the gold price change every day?
Gold trades internationally all day, priced in dollars. The Indian price depends on both that international price and the rupee to dollar rate. When either moves, the price here moves.
Why is silver quoted per kilogram?
Silver is far cheaper per gram, so per kilo is the practical unit for quoting it.
05Why the jeweller's price is higher
Why is the shop's price higher than the "gold rate today" I saw?
Because the published rate is for the metal itself. By the time it is a finished piece in a shop, the price also carries import duty, GST and the jeweller's making charges. Those additions are normal, but they are why the counter price is always above the headline rate.
What are making charges?
What the jeweller charges for turning metal into a finished piece. They typically run from about 8% to 25% depending on the design, and they are often negotiable.
What taxes are inside the price?
Imported gold carries an import duty, and GST applies on top. On our board we show duty at 6% and GST at 3% on the metal, so you can see how the reference price is built up.
Why is Indian gold more expensive than the international price?
Take the international price, convert it at the rupee rate, then add import duty, GST and the local market premium. That is the gap.
What is the "market premium"?
Whatever sits between the landed cost of the metal and what the market actually charges: local demand, supply and dealer margins. It tends to widen in festival and wedding season.
Why is gold cheaper in Dubai?
Mostly tax. Import duty and GST make up a real part of the Indian price. Bringing gold back has customs limits, so it is worth checking the rules before counting on the saving.
Is now a good time to buy gold?
We do not answer that. We publish what the price is. What it does next is not ours to promise.
06About our numbers
Where do your rates come from?
From several independent sources, cross checked against each other. Where sources simply republish one another, we count them once, because repeating a number does not make it truer.
Why does your number differ from another site's?
We compute a consensus across sources and reject outliers, rather than passing through a single feed.
Why is a rate sometimes missing?
Because we did not have a number we trusted. If sources disagree too far, or a move looks implausible, we hold the last verified value with its timestamp, or show nothing at all. A missing row never means the rate is zero.
Is this the rate I will actually get?
No. We measure the market. We do not set it and we do not trade, so any bank, app or counter will differ.
Does this cost anything? Do I need an account?
No. The site is free, there is no login, and there is nothing to buy.
